Direct hike to the Wettersteinhütte at 1,930 m – starting point for the Gehrenspitze and Scharnitzjoch with magnificent views into the Karwendel.

The hike to the Wettersteinhütte is one of the most direct and rewarding hut tours in the Gaistal. Covering 8 km with 730 metres of elevation, the ascent leads from the Gaistal valley floor up to the Wettersteinhütte at 1,930 m – one of the best-known launch points for more demanding mountain tours in the Wettersteingebirge. Those who head to the hut as a day or overnight destination are rewarded with a magnificent panorama and the warmth of genuine mountain hut hospitality.

The Wettersteinhütte: More Than a Refreshment Stop

The Wettersteinhütte is one of the most popular huts in the Gaistal – not despite, but because of its alpine setting. At almost 2,000 m it offers:

  • Starting point for the Gehrenspitze (2,166 m)
  • Main station of the Hochalmen-Rundwanderung
  • Overnight accommodation with 35 sleeping places plus the unique Kuschelhütte
  • Panoramic views of the Zugspitze, Wetterstein and Karwendel

The Schütz family hut is known for its hospitality – open daily 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., with a hot kitchen and a terrace that fully justifies the ascent.

Route Description

Start at Stupfer car park (P2): From the car park at approx. 1,080 m, the marked hiking trail towards the Wettersteinhütte begins. The first few minutes lead flat through the lower Gaistal.

Gaistalbachgraben (approx. 1 hr.): The path climbs into the Gaistalbachgraben – a wildly romantic stream gorge with beautiful waterfalls and dense vegetation. This is the most strenuous phase of the ascent: steep, but well marked and, thanks to the shade of the gorge, pleasant even on hot days.

Leaving the gorge (approx. 30 min.): In the upper section the path leaves the gorge and emerges onto open alpine terrain. The view opens up suddenly – the entire upper Gaistal lies at your feet, the Wetterstein walls tower directly before you.

Wangalm (1,750 m, approx. 30 min.): On the way to the Wettersteinhütte you pass the Wangalm – an ideal intermediate stop. From the Wangalm it is about another 45 minutes uphill to the Wettersteinhütte.

Wettersteinhütte (1,930 m): Arrival after approx. 3 hours. The hut sits on a small alpine terrace – from the terrace the full view of the Zugspitze and the Wetterstein massif. Brettljause, hot food, cold beer – all available.

Return and Alternatives

Same route back: Approx. 2.5 hours, a pleasant descent through the Wangalmwald.

Hochalmen circuit: Those who are fit continue from the Wettersteinhütte to the Wangalm and then complete the full Hochalmen-Rundwanderung (12.5 km) back to the car park. This variant requires an additional 1.5–2 hours.

Gehrenspitze: Continue from the Wettersteinhütte up to the Gehrenspitze (2,166 m) – approx. 2.5 hrs. upward, sure-footed walkers only.

Overnight Stay at the Hut

The Wettersteinhütte offers two special overnight options:

  • 35 sleeping places in the main building – classic mountain hut overnight stay
  • Kuschelhütte for 2–8 people – the most exclusive overnight option in the Gaistal, in a separate small hut building

For both: advance booking required (+43 660 3462100). The Kuschelhütte is particularly in demand – book at least 2 weeks in advance.

Requirements

  • Moderate fitness: 730 m over 4 km of ascent
  • Sturdy hiking footwear (mountain boots recommended)
  • Sufficient water for the ascent
  • Waterproof jacket (weather can change quickly at this altitude)

Tips for the Tour

  • Kuschelhütte: Book well in advance – extremely limited capacity
  • Combined with the Gehrenspitze: Set off early – the summit tour should be completed by noon
  • Dogs: Welcome up to the hut (not permitted inside the hut itself)
  • Hochalmen circuit as an extension: Once you’re up there, you’ll want to do the whole circuit – plan your time accordingly

The hike to the Wettersteinhütte is the direct route into the heart of the Gaistal high mountains.
