The Gaistal is one of the most dog-friendly hiking areas in Tyrol – with a few caveats. Here’s which huts welcome your four-legged companion, what you need to know about leash rules, and which routes are particularly well suited.
Dog-friendly huts in the Gaistal
Not every alpine hut is happy to see dogs – often because of livestock grazing on the surrounding meadows. These huts explicitly welcome dogs:
| Hut | Altitude | Highlight |
|---|---|---|
| Gaistalalm | 1,350 m | Easy to reach, water nearby |
| Tillfußalm | 1,420 m | Large outdoor terrace, shady |
| Wangalm | 1,750 m | Dogs explicitly welcome |
| Rotmoosalm | 1,580 m | Quiet location, little bustle |
| Kristenalm | 1,650 m | Unmanned, lots of freedom |
| Katzenkopfhütte | 1,360 m | Family-friendly & dog-friendly |
Which routes are ideal for dogs?
The best routes with dogs in the Gaistal:
- Gaistal Family Walk: Flat, shady, stream for cooling off – ideal for dogs of all sizes
- Ganghoferweg Circular Tour: 10 km, well marked, several water sources along the way
- Hike to Rotmoosalm: Peaceful, with few encounters with livestock on the main path
- High Alms Circular Hike: Demanding, but dog-friendly along the route
Leash rules in the Gaistal
In the Gaistal, dogs must be kept on a leash on designated stretches and in areas with grazing livestock. Particular care is needed from May to October, when cows, sheep and goats graze on the alpine meadows:
- Always keep dogs on a leash when livestock is visible
- When encountering a herd: walk around the herd, never between a mother and her young
- Always clean up after your dog – especially important on alpine meadows
Tips for a day out with your dog
- Bring water: Especially in the heat, dogs need plenty of fluids. There are streams along the way, but not everywhere.
- Start early: On hot summer days, set off before 10 a.m. – more comfortable for humans and animals alike
- Check paws: Gravel paths can be hard on paws during longer tours
