If you’re driving to the Gaistal, the question quickly arises: where should I park, and how far is it from there to my chosen alpine hut? This guide has the answer.
Car parks at a glance
The Gaistal has several car parks along the toll road at varying depths into the valley. The general rule: the further in you park, the shorter the walk to the high-altitude alms – but the narrower the road.
P1 – Gaistal Entrance (Salzbach)
The Salzbach car park is right at the entrance to the valley and is the largest and most easily accessible. Ideal for:
- Gaistal Family Walk (circular route along the stream)
- Ganghoferweg Circular Tour
- Tillfußalm on foot in approx. 45 min.
P2 – Stupfer
The Stupfer car park is the most popular for medium and long hikes. Starting points from here:
- Hämmermoosalm in approx. 30 min.
- High Alms Circular Hike (12.5 km)
- Hike to Wangalm
- Hike to Rotmoosalm
P3–P5 – Upper Gaistal
The car parks further into the valley are well suited for tours towards Seebensee and Hochfeldernalm. The road narrows here – during busy periods it can get tight.
Costs
The car parks are included in the toll price (€4.50 per car). Anyone who has paid the toll is free to use any of the car parks – no additional ticket required.
Tips for stress-free parking
- Start early: On fine summer days, P2 and P3 are often full by 10 a.m.
- Take the bus: Line 431 from Leutasch goes into the valley – no parking stress
- Prefer a weekday: Tuesday and Wednesday are generally quieter than Saturday/Sunday
- Allow for the return: Sometimes the exit is congested – build in a 30-minute buffer
All information on getting there by bus and train can be found on the Arrival page.
