The Wiener Neustädter Hütte at 2,213 m lies in the Austrian Schneekar on the western flank of the Zugspitze and is the most alpine destination in the immediate vicinity of the Gaistal. As a DAV hut and Austrian Alpine Club base, it is the classic starting point for the famous Stopselzieher via ferrata – one of the most renowned and spectacular via-ferrata routes in the entire Zugspitz region.
History and Name
The name goes back to the Austrian Alpine Club section of Wiener Neustadt, which built and operates the hut from the end of the 19th century onwards. The hut has a history of over a hundred years as a mountaineering base on the Zugspitze – a time when the ascent of the Zugspitze was still a genuine adventure and no cable car ran to the summit.
This history is palpable: the hut has the character of a true alpinism base, not a tourist comfort offering.
Location: In the Schneekar
The Schneekar at 2,213 m is a high-alpine cirque on the Austrian western side of the Zugspitze. The hut sits in the middle of this cirque – surrounded by rock, old snow (even in summer) and the imposing Zugspitze summit area. The panorama is breathtaking: to the north the Zugspitze summit region, to the south the view into the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena and down to the Inn Valley.
The terrain around the hut is high-alpine: no trees, no grassy slopes – only rock, scree and the distinctive beauty of the high mountains.
The Stopselzieher Via Ferrata
The Stopselzieher via ferrata is the main reason mountaineers from across Europe make their way to the Wiener Neustädter Hütte. The route leads from the hut to the Zugspitze summit (2,962 m) – with a distinctive, nearly vertical passage that gave the route its nickname: the path screws its way like a corkscrew (Austrian: Stopselzieher) through the rock face.
Difficulty grade: C/D (medium-difficult to difficult) on the Hüsler scale. Requirements:
- Via-ferrata equipment: harness, via-ferrata set, helmet
- Sure-footedness and a head for heights absolutely essential
- Fitness for approx. 6–8 hours total walking time (from the valley)
- Dry conditions only – extremely dangerous when wet
Requirements and Safety
The Wiener Neustädter Hütte and the Stopselzieher are suitable exclusively for experienced via-ferrata climbers. Mountaineers without via-ferrata equipment and experience should not attempt this tour.
Important notes:
- Start early (04:00–05:00 for a summit attempt is recommended)
- Check the weather forecast: the Zugspitz massif is known for rapid weather changes
- Bring sufficient water and emergency rations
- Plan for a descent option via the Zugspitzbahn (buy a return ticket!)

Getting There
From Ehrwald: The standard approach leads from the Zugspitz Arena Ehrwald (valley station of the Zugspitzbahn) via the trail into the Schneekar to the hut. Walking time: approx. 3–4 hours (1,100 m altitude gain). Well marked but increasingly demanding.
From the Gaistal: From the Gaistal via Ehrwald (approx. 30 minutes’ drive) or theoretically via high-alpine terrain via the Coburgerhütte – only for very experienced mountaineers.
Combination Options
- Wiener Neustädter Hütte → Stopselzieher → Zugspitze: The classic via-ferrata tour to the highest German summit
- Zugspitze → Zugspitzbahn → descent: Reach the summit under your own power, descend comfortably by cable car
- Ehrwalder Almbahn → Ehrwalderalm → Schneekar: Two-day variant with an overnight stay at the hut
Tips for Your Visit
- Reservation: Book in advance without fail; the 25 places fill up quickly in summer
- Via-ferrata course: Those who have never done a via ferrata should complete an introductory course first
- Zugspitzbahn: Plan it as a descent option – a return ticket saves time and energy in an emergency
- DAV membership: Reduced overnight rates for members
The Wiener Neustädter Hütte is for via-ferrata enthusiasts and ambitious mountaineers – one of the most exciting huts in the Zugspitz region.
