The Seebenalm lies directly on the shore of the Seebensee – one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in Tyrol at 1,808 m altitude. Those who cross the last ridge after ascending from the Gaistal and suddenly see the turquoise lake shimmering before them will never forget that moment. The water mirrors the surrounding rock faces and – on clear days – the Zugspitze itself. The Seebenalm is the finishing touch to this panorama: a cosy terrace right on the lakeshore, fresh food and the absolute stillness of the high mountains.

The Seebensee – A Natural Jewel

The Seebensee at 1,808 m is one of the few high-alpine mountain lakes in the Zugspitz region that can be reached on foot without climbing equipment. The turquoise-green colour of the water comes from the glacially polished limestone of the surrounding rock faces. Early in the morning the lake lies in the shadow of the surrounding peaks and mirrors the sky; at midday the sun floods the water with emerald light.

Directly on the lakeshore lies the Drachensee – a smaller lake with fewer visitors, known for its tranquillity and unspoilt natural beauty. Those with time should visit both lakes.

The Alm

The Seebenalm is a relatively recently built alm building that blends harmoniously into the landscape. On the large wooden terrace directly on the lakeshore you sit looking at the Zugspitze and the Drachensee. This is one of the most spectacular spots to stop for refreshments in all of Tyrol.

The offering is classically alpine: Brettljause, hot daily specials, homemade cakes, Tyrolean cheese and bacon, hot drinks and cold refreshments. Nothing excessive – but everything you need after a demanding ascent.

Note: Dogs are unfortunately not permitted – the sensitive lake landscape and the nature conservation area around the Seebensee make this necessary.

Getting There

The route to the Seebenalm begins at the Stupfer car park (P2) in the Gaistal. From there a well-marked trail leads via the Hochfeldernalm (1,640 m) and continues uphill to the Seebensee. Total walking time: approx. 2–2.5 hours (650 m altitude gain).

In the upper section the path becomes rockier and somewhat steeper – sturdy hiking boots are recommended. The effort is worth it: the final 200 m altitude gain before the lake are among the most beautiful stretches of path in the entire Gaistal.

Alternative route via Ehrwald: Take the Ehrwalder Almbahn cable car from Ehrwald to the Ehrwalderalm and hike from there to the Seebenalm – less altitude gain, but a slightly longer journey.

Combination Options

  • Hochfeldernalm → Seebenalm → Seebensee: The classic destination in the upper Gaistal (half-day or full-day tour)
  • Seebensee → Drachensee: Short extension (approx. 30 min.) to a second mountain lake
  • Overnight at the Hochfeldernalm + early ascent to the Seebensee at sunrise – an unforgettable experience
  • Wiener Neustädter Hütte: For experienced alpinists, continue ascending towards the western flank of the Zugspitze

Tips for Your Visit

  • Start early: The Seebensee is most beautiful in the morning and late afternoon – it can get busy around midday
  • Weather: The altitude makes rapid weather changes possible – always carry a rain jacket
  • Nature conservation: Take rubbish with you, stay on the marked path, no dogs
  • E-bike: Possible to ride as far as the Hochfeldernalm; continue on foot from there

The Seebenalm is a place you visit once – and never forget.
