Rotmoosalm

Those who want to escape the hustle of the better-known alms in the Gaistal will find their refuge in the Rotmoosalm at 1,580 m. A little off the main path, nestled between mountain pine thickets and lush alpine meadows, this staffed alm sits quietly and sheltered – with a direct view of the striking rock faces of the Wettersteingebirge. It is genuinely peaceful here, even on busy summer days in the Gaistal.

Location and Natural Landscape

The Rotmoos is a small high-alpine hollow north of the Gaistalbachtal – a microcosm of alpine meadows, mountain pine heath and scattered boulders. The Rotmoosalm sits right in the middle and is surrounded by nature on all sides. This is not an alm area for mass tourism; it is a place for people who seek solitude.

Particularly striking: the unobstructed view of the Wettersteinwände to the north, which appears even more monumental here than from the broader valley floor. In evening light, when the sun turns the rock faces orange, the panorama is simply breathtaking.

Dogs are expressly welcome at the Rotmoosalm – a bonus for all dog owners who want to explore the Gaistal with their four-legged companion.

Food

The offering is honest and regional: Brettljause with alm cheese and bacon, homemade soups, alm cake and simple hot dishes. No extensive menu – but everything prepared with care. The terrace with its view of the Wettersteinwände makes every meal an experience.

Overnight Stays at Fair Prices

The Rotmoosalm offers one of the most affordable sleeping places in the Gaistal: the 14-place dormitory costs €40 per person including breakfast – an excellent value-for-money ratio for a staffed alm. Advance booking is recommended as places fill up quickly in peak season.

Those who spend the night at the Rotmoosalm experience the Gaistal from its quiet side: without day-trippers, with the sound of the wind and the chiming of the alm bells.

Getting There

The starting point is the Stupfer car park (P2) in the Gaistal. From there follow the main path towards the Wangalm – after approx. 45 minutes a signpost branches left into the Rotmoos. Follow this through mountain pine terrain to the alm. Total walking time from P2: approx. 1.5 hours (480 m altitude gain).

The route is well marked but partly somewhat narrower than the wide forest tracks in the valley area. Good footwear is recommended.

Combination Options

The Rotmoosalm is ideally situated for combination tours on the southern Wetterstein slopes:

• Rotmoosalm → Wangalm: Cross-connection through the alpine slopes (approx. 45 min., some navigational awareness needed)
• Südwandsteig traverse: The Rotmoosalm is a waypoint on the demanding Südwandsteig tour – from here the route continues onto the Schönberggrat
• Hämmermoosalm → Rotmoosalm → Südwandsteig: The classic circuit for sure-footed hikers

• Enjoy the quiet: This place is made for slowing down – put the phone away, breathe, look around
• Overnight reservation: Call ahead in good time; places are limited and go quickly in July/August
