Rauthhütte

The Rauthhütte at 1,605 m sits on a sunny alpine slope above the Gaistal, with sweeping panoramic views across the Inn Valley and the opposing summits of the Hohe Munde. What sets it apart from most other alms in the Gaistal: it is one of the highest-capacity huts in the region – with 5 rooms and a large dormitory for up to 75 people in total. This makes it the ideal destination for club outings, school groups and larger hiking parties.

Location and Views

The Rauthhütte sits on an alpine terrace that opens southwards across the Gaistal and the Inn Valley. The view from the terrace is distinctive: the Gaistal lies at your feet, beyond which the striking silhouette of the Hohe Munde (2,662 m) rises into the sky. On clear days the view extends far across the Inn Valley and, in exceptional visibility, as far as the Stubai Alps.

The hut lies on the southern side of the Wettersteingebirge – which means plenty of sunshine, especially in the second half of the day. Those using the hut as an evening base often witness impressive sunsets behind the Mieminger Kette.

Capacity for Groups

With 5 rooms (3 beds each) and a dormitory with approx. 60 places, the Rauthhütte has the largest accommodation capacity among the staffed alms in the Gaistal area. This makes it the go-to destination for:

• Club hikes and company outings
• School classes and youth groups
• Family reunions and birthday hikes with a larger party

Food

The offering is wholesome and honest: Brettljause with regional specialities, hot daily specials, soups and cakes. Special menus for groups can be arranged on request. The kitchen is regional and freshly prepared.

Getting There

The ascent to the Rauthhütte is possible from two sides:

From the Stupfer car park (P2) in the Gaistal: On a marked trail uphill, approx. 1.5–2 hours. The path leads through woodland and across alpine slopes with increasingly fine views.

From Leutasch: Direct ascent from Leutasch-Weidach or Leutasch-Mitte, also approx. 1.5–2 hours. Somewhat less frequented but well marked.

Both approaches are manageable for experienced walkers. Sure-footedness is advisable; alpine knowledge is not required.

Combination Options

The Rauthhütte lies on a cross-connection between the Gaistal and the Leutascher alpine slopes:

• Rauthhütte → Katzenkopfhütte: Traverse at a similar altitude towards Leutasch-Weidach
• Gaistal loop: Descent into the Gaistal and back via the Ganghoferweg
• Day tour for groups: Breakfast in the valley, ascent, lunch at the hut, descent – a classic day programme for school groups
