The Meilerhütte at 2,366 m is one of the highest huts in the Wettersteingebirge and the most alpine destination reachable from the Gaistal. It perches on a distinctive rocky ridge with a spectacular panoramic view of the Zugspitze, the Zugspitzplatt and the entire Wetterstein massif. Those who arrive here have accomplished a true mountaineering feat – and are rewarded with one of the finest views in the region.

The webcam of the Almenparadies Gaistal is installed at the Meilerhütte – the live stream gives a direct view from the valley of weather conditions and visibility in the high mountains.

An Alpine Hut with History

The Meilerhütte is a DAV hut (German Alpine Club) and thus part of the dense network of mountain huts across the Alps. It has been used for decades as a base for demanding tours in the Wetterstein massif. The hut offers overnight accommodation and a staffed kitchen – though the short season (early July to end of September) and the alpine location set clear expectations.

Guests of the Meilerhütte are generally experienced mountaineers who are either climbing the Zugspitze via demanding routes or planning extensive high-mountain traverses through the Wetterstein.

Location and Panorama

At 2,366 m the Meilerhütte is already well into the high mountains – far above the treeline, on an exposed ridge between rock and sky. The panorama is spectacular: to the north the Zugspitze rises to 2,962 m; to the south the view reaches far across the Inn Valley and, in clear conditions, all the way to the Dolomites.

Sunrise seen from the Meilerhütte – when the first rays illuminate the Zugspitze walls – is an experience that mountaineers remember for life.

Webcam and Weather Conditions

The Wetterstein webcam of the Almenparadies Gaistal is installed at the Meilerhütte. The live stream shows current conditions at over 2,300 m – a valuable reference point for hikers and mountaineers planning a tour in the Gaistal. You will find the current camera stream on the News page.

Requirements and Safety

The Meilerhütte is not a destination for beginners or families with children. The following prerequisites are necessary:

  • Sure-footedness and a head for heights
  • Alpine experience (route-finding in rocky terrain)
  • Mountain equipment: poles, first-aid kit, sufficient water and food
  • Weather awareness: Thunderstorm risk in summer builds early in the day – an early start is essential

Getting There

The approach to the Meilerhütte is via the Wangkopftörl or directly from the Gaistal across demanding mountain terrain. Walking time from the valley floor: approx. 3–4 hours (1,200+ m altitude gain). The route first passes through the mid-altitude alm zones (Wangalm, 1,750 m) and then climbs steeply over rocky ground to the ridge.

One variant leads from the Wettersteinhütte (1,930 m) on to the Wangkopftörl and then to the Meilerhütte – this staged approach is recommended for everyone who does not want to ascend in a single long day.

Combination Options for Mountaineers

  • Meilerhütte → Zugspitze: High-alpine summit tour for very experienced mountaineers; via-ferrata equipment required depending on the route
  • Wetterstein traverse: Crossing of the Wetterstein massif using the Meilerhütte as a base
  • Multi-day Gaistal – Wetterstein tour: High-mountain itinerary with overnight stays in several DAV huts

The Meilerhütte is the most alpine facet of the Gaistal – for all those who want to experience the Gaistal not just from below, but from above.
