Katzenkopfhütte

The Katzenkopfhütte at around 1,360 m lies above the Leutasch district of Weidach and is a genuine insider tip for hikers who want to explore the Gaistal and its surroundings away from the main crowds. The recently renovated hut with its typical Tyrolean tiled stove and large sun terrace offers a fine view of the Wettersteingebirge – and a warm atmosphere that keeps hikers coming back.

Location and Character

Above the Leutasch district of Weidach, the Katzenkopfhütte sits on a wooded slope that opens southwards towards the Wetterstein backdrop. The name comes from the rocky ridge of the same name – the Katzenkopf – that towers over the hut from the east. The terrain is hilly and varied; the hut itself feels more like a cosy mountain inn than an alpine shelter.

Inside, the tiled stove provides a warm glow – the hut is particularly inviting on cool early-autumn days. In summer the large terrace with its mountain views beckons you to sit and stay awhile.

Summer and Winter

In summer it serves as a starting point for easy walks on the Katzenkopf and in the surrounding Leutascher forests. The terrain is ideal for families with children: not too steep, well marked, with fine views along the way.

In winter the hut sits directly on the Leutascher cross-country ski trail – one of the finest cross-country networks in Tyrol. Those exploring the trail through the Leutaschtal find an ideal mid-route stop here. The Katzenkopfhütte is also used as a tobogganing hut in winter – the slope above is well suited for easy sledging.

Food

The offering is modest and down-to-earth: Brettljausen, Tyrolean home cooking, hot soups, coffee and cake. What it lacks in urban gastronomic complexity, the hut more than makes up for in warmth and the quality of its ingredients. Homemade apple strudel is a frequently praised highlight.

Dogs are welcome – a bonus for everyone hiking through Leutasch with their four-legged companion.

Getting There

From Leutasch-Weidach: On a marked trail uphill in approx. 45–60 minutes (approx. 250 m altitude gain). The route is well signposted and manageable for children and older hikers alike.

As an extension to a Gaistal tour: Those coming from the Gaistal can add a detour to the Katzenkopfhütte – from the Leutasch-Weidach car park towards the hut, then back into the valley.

By e-bike: The ascent route is easily rideable on an e-bike – making the hut a rewarding stop for cyclists too.

Combination Options

The Katzenkopfhütte combines well with other destinations in the Leutasch area:

• Leutaschklamm: First visit the spectacular gorge in the valley, then ascend to the Katzenkopfhütte
• Rauthhütte: Cross-connection at a similar altitude (approx. 1 hour, a less-frequented path)
• Ganghoferweg: Descent into the Gaistal via the Ganghoferweg for a larger circular tour (planning required)
