The Ehrwalderalm at 1,502 m lies on the Ehrwald side of the Zugspitz area and is one of the most easily reached mountain alms in the entire region – thanks to the Ehrwalder Almbahn cable car, which runs directly from Ehrwald to the alm station. For families with young children, first-time hikers and anyone who wants to experience the mountain world without great effort, the Ehrwalderalm is an ideal introduction.

Up by Cable Car

The special appeal of the Ehrwalderalm lies in its accessibility: the Ehrwalder Almbahn brings guests from Ehrwald directly to the alm station – the entire ascent takes only a few minutes. This makes the alm a destination that is also well-suited for older visitors, wheelchair users and families with pushchairs or very young children.

Of course the Ehrwalderalm can also be reached on foot – for all those who want to experience the climb under their own steam. The footpath from Ehrwald leads uphill in approx. 1.5 hours and offers beautiful views of the Zugspitz massif.

Location and Panorama

At 1,502 m the Ehrwalderalm commands a magnificent panorama: to the north the Zugspitze (2,962 m), to the east the Wetterstein massif, and to the south a view across the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena. Those lucky enough to sit here in clear weather see the Zugspitze from a side that most visitors to the Gaistal never get to see.

The alm lies in open alpine meadow with wildflower meadows, alm huts and the typical Tyrolean mountain panorama. The Zugspitz-Wetterstein ridge runs along the background – an impressive picture-book setting.

Food and Hospitality

The Ehrwalderalm serves typical Tyrolean alm fare: Brettljause with regional cheese and cold cuts, soups, hot daily specials and homemade cakes. The terrace is generous – ideal for a leisurely lunch in the sunshine.

Dogs are welcome, which makes the alm particularly attractive for dog-loving families. Please keep dogs on a lead in the area of the alm pastures.

Getting There

By cable car: From Ehrwald on the Ehrwalder Almbahn (seasonal; fares on the Zugspitz Arena Ehrwald website). Journey time: a few minutes. Ideal for families, older guests and anyone without the fitness for the ascent.

On foot: From Ehrwald on a marked trail in approx. 1.5 hours (approx. 550 m altitude gain). The route is well signposted and passes through beautiful mixed forest.

From the Gaistal: The Ehrwalderalm is not directly reachable from the Gaistal – the crossing requires alpine terrain. The most practical approach is via Ehrwald (approx. 30 minutes’ drive from the Gaistal car park).

Onward Hiking from the Ehrwalderalm

The Ehrwalderalm is a good starting point for further tours on the Ehrwald side:

  • Seebensee: Hike from the Ehrwalderalm towards the Seebensee and Seebenalm – approx. 1–1.5 hours, a beautiful approach from the west
  • Coburgerhütte: For more experienced hikers, continue uphill towards the western side of the Zugspitze
  • Wiener Neustädter Hütte: Starting point for the Stopselzieher via ferrata (experienced via-ferrata climbers only)

Tips for Your Visit

  • Cable car times: Check operating hours of the Ehrwalder Almbahn before travelling (seasonally variable)
  • Combination with the Seebensee: Those who have ascended from the east (Gaistal) and want to return to Ehrwald can descend via the Ehrwalder Almbahn
  • Dogs: Welcome, on lead in the alm area
  • Rainy-day option: When the weather is poor the cable-car option is ideal – a quick outing regardless of the weather

The Ehrwalderalm is the gentle introduction to the mountain world of the Zugspitz region – for everyone who wants to experience the Gaistal and its surroundings with the whole family.
