The Coburgerhütte at 1,917 m is one of the most storied DAV huts in the Wettersteingebirge and an important base for high-alpine tours towards the Zugspitze and the Ehrwalderalm. Named after a branch of the House of Saxe-Coburg, it sits on a broad high-alpine plateau well above the treeline – with an unobstructed panorama of the surrounding peaks and the Zugspitz massif.

History and Significance

The Coburgerhütte has a long history as a mountaineering base. As a DAV hut it is part of the network of staffed mountain refuges that have enabled alpinism in the Wettersteingebirge since the 19th century. Those who climb from here follow paths that generations of mountaineers have walked before them.

The hut occupies a strategically favourable position between the Gaistal and the Ehrwald Zugspitz area – a natural crossing point between two of the most beautiful mountain worlds in Tyrol.

Location and Panorama

At almost 1,920 m the hut sits in the heart of high-alpine terrain. The treeline is long behind you; rock, scree and grassy alpine slopes dominate the surroundings. The panorama is impressive: the Zugspitze (2,962 m) lies in direct line of sight, and in clear conditions the view extends far across the Inn Valley.

The hut is one of the few places from which both the ascent and the descent into the Gaistal feel like a natural spectacle – especially at dawn or in the evening alpenglow.

Alpine Level

The Coburgerhütte is not a destination for beginners. The approach requires alpine experience, sure-footedness and appropriate equipment. Anyone who is unsure should first explore the lower-lying alms in the Gaistal and gradually work up to higher objectives.

The following basic equipment is recommended for the ascent:

  • Sturdy mountaineering boots (not hiking shoes)
  • Trekking poles
  • Rain protection and a warm extra layer
  • Basic first-aid kit
  • Sufficient water (springs become scarcer at this altitude)

Getting There

The approach to the Coburgerhütte is possible from two sides:

From the Gaistal: Ascent via the Gaistal, more demanding but scenically very beautiful. Walking time from the valley station: approx. 3–4 hours. The route passes through alpine meadow and scree fields into the high mountains.

From the Ehrwald side: A slightly shorter approach from Ehrwald (Zugspitz Arena). From Ehrwald via the Ehrwalderalm, continuing towards the western side of the Zugspitze. Walking time approx. 2.5–3 hours.

Both approaches require alpine experience and good weather – conditions can change dangerously quickly at this altitude.

Combination Options for Mountaineers

  • Coburgerhütte → Zugspitze: High-alpine summit tour; via-ferrata equipment required depending on the route
  • Coburgerhütte → Wiener Neustädter Hütte: High-mountain traverse across exposed terrain
  • Gaistal loop via high-alpine huts: Wettersteinhütte – Meilerhütte – Coburgerhütte as a multi-day traverse

Tips for Your Visit

  • Start early: In summer, thunderstorms often build from early afternoon – summit tours should be completed by 12:00–13:00
  • Hut reservation: DAV huts recommend advance booking, especially in July/August
  • DAV membership: Members pay reduced overnight rates

The Coburgerhütte is for those who want to experience the Gaistal in its alpine dimension – high up, close to the Zugspitze.
